eClub sending funds to Valerie Browing AFAR

Our eClub D9510online, Australia has been collecting donations and have forwarded funds directly to Valerie. In an email she replied that “these funds will help to purchase emergency food and milk for the children in the villages she is travelling to in the next few days”, she is very, very overwhelmed with the support we have been able to provide. A little bit of good news is that the Ethiopian Government troops have moved into the local towns and blocked the Tigrayan forces and moving them further north away from the AFAR region.

The following is a short update from Valerie Browning:

Dear all again,

this is the latest info – as of the last 3 days, the PM is actually ordering the army and there have been advances.

If this means TPLF will be out of Afar Region, this is tenuous since the border is very long and the hills very porous for such activities. Afar displaced will not be secure to go home for sometime. Then the recovery is such a long road ahead.

APDA is working hard to assist any other NGOs to take assistance in and also looking at how to balance between those in the community who have some ability to feed their household and those who are destitute – trying to stimulate markets and so on.

As winter sets in for these people, sincerely need to work harder to battle the shelter issues – Afar traditional mats above anything are wanted and needed to build an Afar nomadic house again. with many thanks to each of you

Valerie

Worst Locust Swarms in Decades – Can you help?

CAN YOU HELP?
Worst Locust Swarms in Decades

Hundreds of millions of desert locusts are swarming in Ethiopia some of the biggest numbers seen in more than 25 years. Recent floods in the area toward the end of the year has contributed to the massive outbreak, driving an explosion of locusts that are destroying crops and threatening food security across the region.

Modbury Rotary Club – Good News Story

In recognition of the Port Arthur tragedy on 28/29 April 1996 the R.C. of Modbury, in conjunction with Trees for Life and staff and students of Modbury Primary School, undertook a planting of 35 eucalypts and casuarinas on a recently cleared reserve at Sandalwood Drive, St. Agnes. Each plant was intended to reflect upon the life of each of the victims of the rogue gunman on that fateful day. The planting was undertaken in May 1996.

In 2018 the City of TTG Council undertook significant refurbishment of the planted area including the replacement of a number of the plants which had not survived the initial planting.

End POLIO Now – Rotary’s Major Project

Two reasons why we don’t have Polio in this Country? Rotary’s initiative 33 years ago to stamp it out! and vaccinating your child, we don’t have it in Australia due to vaccinating and if you don’t vaccinate, we are just an overseas visitor away from someone getting it!

Rotary Clubs are continually working on the END POLIO NOW program. Want to be involved in Rotary, let us know! https://voiceofrotary.org.au/contact-us/

Modbury Rotary Club – Good News Award

Good News Award

This initiative was launched for a 12 month trial period in February 2017 with the first award being made in May 2017. Subsequent awards were made in August and November 2017.

At our Partners meeting #1629 on 26 February 2018 we were pleased to acknowledge our fourth winner, Ben Kempster, and present him with a certificate of award and a cheque for $250. Ben outlined the features of the fitness programme which he runs with the support of his employer SA Power Networks with all funds raised being donated to the Women’s and Children’s Foundation. Ben, a fitness coach and personal trainer, is clearly committed not only to helping others to ‘get that spark back’ but also to helping those in the wider community who are in genuine need.

A worthy Good News Award winner indeed.

Now that we have completed the 12 month trial run of the Good News Award we can look back on our 4 winners to date:
